People from every part of the world, of every ethnic background and all sexual persuasions are increasingly flocking to the “Culture Capital of South America”, a vibrant cauldron where all the arts, from classical music to avant-garde cinema to rock concerts to experimental theatre, continue to flourish. The gay community makes itself felt in every walk of life, and this is reflected not just in rapidly changing social attitudes to homosexuality but also in new legislation and continuous innovation and exploration.
In 2003, the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires passed the Civil Unions Act, a groundbreaking law granting to gay couples rights that have no parallel in any other Latin American country. This shows an important level of mature coexistence and social integration and adds to Buenos Aires’s image as a cosmopolitan city, an image feeding back on its ever more numerous visitors.
